I am writing an article on the Camino for my school newspaper, and I am also doing the Camino de Santiago this summer. As well as information for this article, I am also doing this for information for me. Anyway, I would really appreciate your help and input!! Thanks!!

How do you recommend someone trains for this?

How heavy should your backpack be?

What type of footwear do you recommend?

What are the most important things to pack?

Do you recommend hiking poles?

What did you find to be the hardest part in hiking the Camino?

What should people know about this particular trip?

Any stories/comments/etc. you have would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Katherine

The GR10 total distance is 866km and is one of a number of official long-distance paths (Grandes Randonnees) in France. You can get the guidebook for the GR10 here. This classic long-distance walk across the Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean takes about 50 days to complete, but the author divides it into sections conveniently tackled in a fortnight’s holiday, with details of accommodation and transport. This classic long-distance walk across the Pyrenees from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean takes a lower route than the more arduous Pyrenean High Route. Nevertheless it passes through striking mountain country and gorge scenery. The easy ascent of the Pic du Midi d’Ossau is described as an excursion. The route takes about 50 days to complete, but the author divides it into sections conveniently tackled in a fortnight’s holiday, with details of accommodation and transport. There is invaluable practical information for Australian walkers visiting France for the first time. The GR10 is one of a number of official long-distance paths (Grandes Randonnees) in France. The GR system is very extensive and some 40,250km of footpath have been designated and waymarked. Each GR route has been allocated a number. The GR10 runs from Hendaye on the west coast through the mountains of the Pays Basque, Bearn and Hautes Pyrenees to Luchon. From here it continues generally in an easterly direction to pass the sparsely populated Ariege, then across the Pyrenees Orientales to end on the Mediterranean coast at Banyuls-sur-Mer.

Comment on The end? … or just the beginning? by barbara http://www.gregspurgin.net/walking-the-camino-de-santiago/2010/10/03/the-end-or-just-the-beginning/#comment-208 Sun, 03 Oct 2010 20:33:07 +0000 http://www.gregspurgin.net/walking-the-camino-de-santiago/?p=415#comment-208 Oh Judy I came straight over here when I read your comment on my LiveSTRONG post. Firstly, I hope Greg is okay, secondly I hope you are okay. Bryan wrote a funny email to friends when I went into hospital, describing the hospital system. I guess it was his way of coping and putting our friends and family back home at ease.

However you now have an excuse to visit Spain again to complete the walk. To get so close and be denied the final 120K is a tough one. The camino will always be there. Greg’s health is more important. One of our camino friends from Germany had to give up the walk about the same distance out. She has since gone back and completed it.

You have described the camino experience perfectly in this post. The friends you made on the camino will become friends for life. After our camino, a couple from South America visited us in NZ. We had met him on the camino when he walked it with his brother. His wife found it a little hard to comprehend the bond between us. I said to her ‘Once you have been pilgrims together on the camino you take care of each other for ever’.

We postponed out train trip across the nullarbor as I wasn’t feeling well enough after the last treatment and moving house. So we will pass through Adelaide in February now and look forward to seeing you both then.

Beun camino.

Unfortunately Greg ended up in hospital in Lugo overnight on Friday and now we’re staying in an apartment in Lugo for a few days waiting and hoping that he gets better. Our lovely long walk is over, 5 days before we were due to finish in Santiago. We’re both very, very disappointed, and at this stage I’m not really sure what will happen next. We had organised to go to Germany next weekend, then fly home from there. We’ll wait and see.

The drystone buildings are the ones that look the best, and have often stood the test of time the best too.

One of the most incredible things, though, is to note your words that mountains behind Astoga “interest” you. Setting the physical feat aside for just a moment, I am struck by your amazing attitude and how, despite the considerable challenges, blisters, injuries, occasional lack of accommodation, food, sleep etc etc, you are quite literally able to take everything in your stride(s)! Keep going, stay strong and WELL DONE!

Although we have a few big climbs to do in a few days which might test us a bit. We met a Swiss couple on the second day of our trip and they had already walked 1200km from their home in Switzerland! The wife just shrugged and said ‘We are very fit now’. No kidding! Love to you both and Owen, Judy & Peter.

We had a rather bad experience with the spanish railways on our way back home. The station was moved, although still on the map, the 1st class seats were old and didn’t function properly, the train had a delay of 50 minutes. But we got home safely and will return on the camino next year!!!

It was certainly a test of strength and many virtues. We were quite relieved that a section of the road was closed off to traffic for the bike race, otherwise it probably would have been worse as we were walking through it at around 5pm on a Friday afternoon.

I remember the approach into Burgos being extremely tough. We got to the stage where we would stagger from street bench to street bench and collapse, rest 10 minutes and stagger to the next bench. We stayed at the first hotel we came too (I think it was called The American – statue of El Cid nearby)

Look out for a refugio in Ruitelan, run by 2 gay guys, includes an excellent dinner and breakfast in the tariff.
Buen Camino

We went to mass, then shared the soup in the dining room, and while we were having dinner the hospitalleros moved the tables and chairs aside and put mattresses on the floor for us to sleep on. Love to you both – it’s thanks to you and Bryan that we’re having this wonderful experience, we hadn’t even heard of the Camino de Santiago before you told us about it. Judy

May the next cafe (or wine fountain) be just over the hill or down the next dale.
